Wiring sexual dimorphism

Sexual dimorphism requires regulatory cascades that can switch the specification of cell types between males and females. Ling Loh, Arnaud Martin and colleagues use CRISPR knock-outs and single-cell transcriptomics to decipher the regulatory logic of sexual dimorphism in sulphur butterflies, where males display bright ultraviolet colors thanks to specialized iridescent scales.

Subpopulations of stem-like memory T cells

How do T stem cell-like memory (TSCM) cells help to maintain long-term immune memory? Danai Koftori, Charandeep Kaur, Laura Mora Bitria, Becca Asquith and co-workers reveal that human TSCM cells comprise two distinct subpopulations with complementary roles; one supporting clonal longevity and the other driving expansion and self-renewal, together functioning as a stem cell population.

The sound of silence?

Neurons encoding positive or negative prediction errors signal a mismatch between the expected and the experienced input. Amit Yaron, Kenichi Ohki, Hirokazu Takahashi, Zenas Chao and co-authors show how neurons encoding negative prediction errors in the auditory system compute the omission of sounds in a predictable tone sequence.

Activating fish eggs

Animal development requires egg activation, which is initiated by calcium waves, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Jiajia Ma and Tom Carney show that protease activation of the Par2a receptor on the zebrafish egg surface is required for successful fertilization. Don't miss the accompanying Primer.

Brainstem representation of environmental sounds

Classical studies suggested that slow amplitude fluctuations in sounds critical for speech recognition are poorly represented in the brainstem. Chris Scholes, Christian Sumner and colleagues show that overlooked intricacies of spike timing represent these fluctuations, reconciling low-level neural processing with perception.

Synaptic dynamics during the sleep–wake cycle

Conflicting results have been observed regarding changes in synaptic strength in the cerebral cortex during the sleep-wake cycle. This computational study by Fukuaki Kinoshita, Hiroki Ueda and co-workers provides a comprehensive understanding and unified framework about synaptic dynamics during the sleep-wake cycle.

Mutant EZH2 in B cell lymphoma

Epigenetic regulators such as EZH2 are known to be mutated in B cell lymphomas, but the effect of these mutations remains unclear. Ofir Griess, Guy Ron, Efrat Shema and co-authors uncover a role for mutant EZH2 in lymphomagenesis, also establishing a new method for measuring epigenetic heterogeneity and intra-chromatin connectivity in cancer cells. Also see the related Primer by Daniel Holoch and Raphaël Margueron.
