Sensory stimuli versus tACS

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) modulates entrainment to rhythmic auditory stimuli, but the details of this interaction are not clear. Yuranny Cabral-Calderin and Molly Henry show that the effects of tACS depend on the individual's preferred frequency when applied alone, and that sensory stimuli have stronger effects than tACS on behavior when both are applied simultaneously.

tRNA half regulates cell cycle progression

Androgen receptor-positive prostate cancer cells abundantly express hormone-dependent tRNA halves, but their functions are unclear. Takuya Kawamura, Megumi Shigematsu and Yohei Kirino show that the 5′-tRNALysCUU half promotes cell cycle progression by destabilizing the mRNA of p21, a negative regulator, suggesting a general role for these molecules.

Zineb Hayatou, Luc Estebanez and colleagues show, using an automated, videography-based procedure, that mice also display quantifiable behavioral markers of the embodiment of an artificial limb, opening the door to future research on these disorders.

RBM39 methylation and lung cancer drug resistance

The RNA-binding protein RBM39 has been previously shown to be a target of the anti-cancer agent Indisulam. Tongjia Zhang, Xiaowei Zhang and co-workers show that RBM39 is methylated by PRMT6, which determines the resistance to Indisulam in lung cancer models due to aberrant splicing events.

What are the molecular targets of inhaled anesthetics like isoflurane? Hiroyuki Kanaya, Ken Kuwajima, Hiroki Ueda and co-authors reveal that isoflurane binds type 1 ryanodine receptor, and show that genetically disrupting a specific residue or pharmacologically activating this binding site with novel agonists can modulate sensitivity to anesthesia.
